Second Language Studies

Angela Haeusler is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Second Language Studies where she has taught classes in the English Language Institute and undergraduate courses on bilingualism & bilingual education, language teaching, and the impact of globalization on English language education. In her teaching, Angela is committed to introduce students to community engagement and active citizenship. Changing the world through language is possible, she believes, if courses provide students with opportunities to engage in language advocacy and hands-on activism. In 2014 she received UH Mānoa’s Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching for a graduate assistant.

Angela’s teacher activism is also reflected in her research. Her dissertation is concerned with re-envisioning multilingual policies in Hawai‘i. In a series of community projects she seeks to raise awareness for the individual and societal value of Hawai‘i’s language diversity and hopes to contribute with her work to an inclusive environment where speakers can use their language skills as an asset and multilingualism can thrive.
